A P.S., to Susanna, on your latest post; I was pleased to read your mention of the Eric Johnson interview on Hidden Brain, about factors affecting our choices. I don't always manage to listen to that feature, but it's a favorite of mine, and usually very interesting and insightful when I do. I missed hearing that one; I'll have to try finding & listening to/reading it, online.

Can we talk about the celery juice craze!!! Bought a juicer, spent my mornings (with lockdown last year at least it was a diversion) cleaning, juicing and gagging down copious amount of the stuff...With no visible change or world shaking improvements internally gave up and decided at 76 time will march on regardless and to make the most of it with more appealing choices. Grandaughter is thrilled with the hand-me-down

Oh, lord help us all, I remember that. We humans are so susceptible. And: Gagging down celery juice, is not the way we want to spend the pandemic. (Although just eating anything and everything I want wasn't a good option either. :)

I just love this so much on so many levels. And I do have a very good smoothie recipe for you, but you should splurge on fresh turmeric as it's much milder than the powder. Thank you for this wonderful boost on a post-long-weekend morning.

Aw, thanks KVO, I'm so so glad to hear that. And yes, send the smoothie recipe on, I'm a convert. :)

Love this one <3 You're not nuts for not knowing how to react to that guy. Whenever a Gross Man objectifies me, I almost never come up with something witty to say back. When someone says something totally uncalled for, our brains (rightfully) don't immediately think of all the best comebacks to put them in their place. I'm sure the sisterhood would agree — that's not just you SS!

A fun column about the nutritional supplements. So, when I read the story about your date, and came to the line, "He put his supplement powders in there with frozen mango and kale, and...", my eye, going a little faster ahead than my brain was processing, was sure that the last word there was going to be "vodka". [Would have been funnier if it was--but he didn't sound like the type for that!] I'm not much into any supplements, myself. ... You know, each time when you refer to Prospect Park, I always wonder where that is... I assume, somewhere in NYC? I know there's a Prospect Park (a town) in NJ, and for that matter, we have a park by that name, right close by here in Wheat Ridge (CO); I imagine, there are Prospect Parks all over the east coast, and elsewhere!

Hey Pete, Thanks so much. Ha ha! A kale vodka smoothie would be a very Brooklyn thing to make. Prospect park is in Brooklyn, and it's 500 acres of soul-saving trees and hills and ponds. Literally kept a lot of us sane here. Will note next time! Take care, S

I'm sure I've heard of it, in Brooklyn, it has sounded familiar. I grew up in NJ, but a ways from "city"; in New Brunswick. We do indeed have a Prospect Park real close to me here in Wheat Ridge CO--nice park (much smaller than yours) with a pond and Clear Creek flowing through it... I can easily drive, bike, or walk to it; a great bike/walking path along Clear Creek runs for "miles" both east and west, to Denver and the South Platte River, and to Golden and on into the mountains.

I loved this! I'm also very into supplements, and age nearly 50, I've gotten in nootropics to make my brain work better. I take turmeric regularly to help fight the pain in my back, shoulders and arms from working as a writer. :) As to your question about why we give lethal names to innocuous kitchen gadgets, that's to appeal to the fellas! Coke ZERO was created because men wouldn't drink DIET Coke (despite the construction worker campain starring Lucky Whatshisname in the 90s), and other protein bars, drink mixes, etc. rebranded or created special lines (POWERFUL yogurt???) to appeal to the male demo. Sometimes, that's what has to be done to make the sale.

Hey Annette, Thanks so much! I have found some recipes to use the turmeric, but didn't know it helped with pain.... Cause yah, my shoulders are right under my ears these days from sitting at a computer. I bet Coke Zero does well. And on the topic of naming objects like weapons, my favorite is the packing tape dispenser that's called at tape GUN. Ha! Sus

I tried Turmeric as well. I was dealing with a very painful frozen shoulder at the time. Later I learned that you need to add black pepper to make it more bioavailable. In the end, it didn’t help me much. Time was the ultimate healer. In hindsight, I wish I had taken some strong pain medication.

I don’t miss the the days when men were going after me and commenting on my body. I’m with your daughter on that one.

Glad to be connected and to receive your wonderful newsletters.

My best friend since we were 18 always had cream over her cereal; milk is too watery, she said. Dessert every evening was a candy bar. She refused to exercise, even go for a walk. Her only acknowledgement that she was overweight was to complain about how hard it was to find attractive clothes. She recently dropped dead-literally - at age 81, after preparing dinner in her own kitchen, in her own house. Are we missing something?

I hear you! My uncle too, kept ticking, with mind as sharp as a tack and terrible eating and exercise habits. He died at 82 in front of his computer.

I'd agree that Terry was rude. But it occurs to me that he was paying you a compliment, however poorly done.

And yes, as we age we do tend to focus on our physical weirdnesses. It's ok. You'll grow out of it. 😁

I’m with your daughter — hope you ran and never looked back. On a related note, that litany of ailments — my aunt (who’s a healthy 82 year old) calls those “organ recitals,” and even at 62, I’m starting to hear and share more of them, myself. Comes with the miles, I guess.

Next time somebody asks you do to do a 360, do a 180 instead. You deserve better. (Anyone deserves better.)

Warm regards —

Jeff
