You want to know what's delighted me lately? Getting your update has really floated my boat. I've missed you and it was a nice lift to hear from you.

My heart goes out to you about your flooding. My basement was flooded on June 1, 2000 - 33,000 gallons of water! My response was to get my canoe out and paddle up and down the street. I needed a lift and gave the neighbors something to talk about besides their own flooding. So I can imagine something of what you've been through. I hope you've been able to salvage the valuable items.

Are you no longer with Time? Are you freelancing? How are your Lyme symptoms?

I look forward to continuing to hear from and about you.

Hi Dave! Great to see you here in the comments. Isn't it fabulous that I can reply like this? I'll still be doing pieces for TIME, but the newsletter will live here. I'm even a little late to the party on Substack, so many of my colleagues are already publishing over here. Though George Saunders just joined, so I'm in good company. The Lyme has been dormant, but the medical establishment hasn't been all that helpful., so I can't attribute it to them. Thanks so much for being a founding member. It means a lot. Reply to the newsletter email any time, and I'll get your message (another cool feature.) Take good care, Susanna

Good morning - I live just outside of Boston and am a huge fan of this column!! You definitely brighten my days with your humility, honesty, and insightful articles. I will happily subscribe to Substack :). Yesterday, I reconnected with a couple who I hadn't seen since pre-Covid and it was a wonderful reunion. I became friendly with them through their son who was a high school student of mine. Sadly, he died over 20 years ago at the age of 21 yet I've remained friends with them over 25 years.

Thank you so, so much for your kind words and your support Jacalyn. And I'm so glad you got to see your friends—what a story about how you know them. Those are the kind of bonds that endure, even through a pandemic. Sus

Nice to have you back.

Could I remark that knowing a language is always a gain for us and we should make an effort to keep the knowledge. In the early 1950's I did what is now called an internship in a German machine tool factory that led to some quick learning of German. This helped me a lot when I was already working and had to deal with German companies. I am now retired but still try to maintain my knowledge by subscribing to some German sites on the internet. May I suggest that you also make an effort to keep your hard-won French?

I am a retiree and a widower who has some health problems.

Thanks so much, Kwa Tjong-Liem. Great to see you here. And totally agree. I watch a lot of French TV series on streaming services and it helps. And bravo on keeping your German. Where are you living now?

I expect that you already know about the Alliance Francaise. the French institute to assist with the learning {and maintaining) of the French language.

Since 1968 we are living in Singapore, classified as not a democracy by President Biden, I was born and grew up in what at the time were the Dutch East Indies and is now called Indonesia. Both my wife and I are ethnically Chinese. Somebody in my family did some research on the family's history and found things like that I am of the 11th or 12th generation.

I am also a dog person. My wife was big-hearted, she liked both dogs and cats

Hello!

So great to have you back Susanna!

I’m Carol, in SW FL. I’ve been delighted lately with the magnificent blooms beginning to appear on my Christmas cactus plant. It belonged to my mom who passed away 4 years ago this month. When I see the blooms begin to form I know she’s smiling on me!

Looking forward to sharing “life” with all of your friends! With this new forum I feel connected in a way I’ve not felt for a long time!

Sending positive vibes for a tremendous following!

This week, I'm delighted that my daughter preventive mastectomy went well, with a negative pathology report, a recovery faster than I thought it would be, and a procedure less destructive that it could have been. She is a single mother of 3, and a doctor who spends 10 hours a day in an OR. The family and the profession alone would be a lot to juggle, then came the need for the surgery, then Covid at school, her mother deceased (no help there), in other words we need "It's not just you", and for that we are grateful. Hi Emmanuel, That report is the most delightful burst of good news. I'm so glad for you and your daughter and her kids that she will be ok. She must be an incredibly strong person to manage all that even without the threat of cancer. She's lucky to have you as dad, as am I to have you in this little clan. Thank you for coming over here with me, and sending your whole family warmth and hugs for this new year.

Greetings, Susanna and everyone. I'm Elinore, an ''early boomer'', a visual artist. Transplanted myself from DC to Israel 50 years ago, after a year on a kibbutz and finding an Israeli husband.

I don't know how this reached my mailbox, but it sounds very intregueing.
